Much of this depends on what you mean by ordinary quartz. If you mean clear quartz optically pure (the material that antique glass beads came from). Quartz is almost pure silicon dioxide (SiO2). crystals quartz, however, often have impurities (including defects in the crystal structure, and even air bubbles), which tend to make the colored glass or smoke when viewed. amethyst quartz is that it is impure iron (and sometimes manganese compounds or aluminum, by source). Amethyst gem quality generally have a very deep purple color and often are not synthetic and natural materials.
