How do you go about purchasing gold coins?

The Shoe In Your Face asked:

The treasury website offers 1oz gold coins for sale.
Gold dealers tell me that the treasury sells only something called "proof" coins which are more expensive.
Can anyone help with this confusion?
Jim Crow. What the heel are you talking about?
