How do I keep a shade over 35 seconds with the flute?

My teacher told us to practice long tones held evryday and we must maintain for 40 seconds. But still only a score of 10-15 seconds. Can anyone help?

It seems obvious that you do not activate your diaphragm correctly when reading, which is the most crucial in the control of respiration. There is no way out of this brief only get one greater lung capacity through practice.
